The popularity of mild hybrid engines is increasing. In addition to hybrid and plug-in hybrid options, most automakers now offer them as standard engines. But, how does a mild-hybrid system work and what makes it different from other types of engines? At Audi, there are multiple mild hybrid systems including a 12V system and a 480-volt system.
For starters, a mild-hybrid engine is a technology that utilizes a very small electric component, usually a 48-volt battery or in some cases a 12 volt system. This battery can serve to help at startup in order to improve fuel consumption by minimizing the strain on the powertrain when turning on your engine. The mild-hybrid powertrain can also serve to provide quick burst of accelerations and improve performance in specific situations.
When compared to a traditional gas engine without electrification, mild-hybrid powertrains deliver increased performance, improved refinement, and excellent fuel economy. In contrast to traditional hybrid engines, this engine has a much smaller battery, meaning the fuel economy benefits aren’t as noticeable. A mild-hybrid system cannot power a vehicle solely by electricity, as opposed to a plug-in hybrid system.
The benefits of a mild-hybrid system are that you get enhanced efficiency with the same behaviour as a traditional gas engine and with very little extra cost. In other words, the battery provides assistance to start the engine, and it can also provide an extra boost of performance under hard acceleration. Moreover, the technology is fairly simple. Therefore, it doesn’t take too much room, it doesn’t add too much weight, and it doesn’t increase cost too much either.
